Today the kids had their swimming test! Yes - only in Germany do they give 5 year olds swimming tests! They had told us that while we weren't allowed to watch the swimming lessons (see older blog) that we COULD come in and watch the test!!
So Bryce and I biked down with the kids today and wait for the kids to get changed and then start to go into the swimming pool area with them.
BUT WAIT!!
We were told we can only enter the swimming pool area if we are wearing togs and not in our street clothes! "Why?" we ask. We are not swimming, we are only watching. But nooooooo - to go into the pool area (not INTO the pool but only to sit on the side and watch) we HAVE to be wearing togs!!!
After moments of confusion (and we were not the only parents that did not know this!!!) B40 whips off his shirt and wraps a towel around his denim shorts. I drape a towel over me as I sit in a chair and hope no-one notices I am not in my togs.
Meanwhile, one of the more resourceful (and German) parents goes up to the counter and asks to borrow some togs (she gets me some too) and so I strip off into these borrowed togs (don't want to think about it), we can then go and watch our kids swim!!!! Madness!
But the girls did really well. S9 swam 25metres of breaststroke and then 25 metres of freestyle! She did so well. And then A6 did 25 metres of breaststroke. She was so proud of herself! And we were too!!
A nice end to yet another "moment".

So really, like the schools, they would rather not have any input from the parents, so make it as difficult as possible for you to be involved. Mega frustration! So good that the girls excelled... how wonderful is that! Grant and I have had a serious discussion about living in France for a couple of years. Hmmmm...
I just dont know how you do it doll, it would drive me batty - you must just want to scream DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN OUNCE OF COMMONSENSE HERE!!!! I thought Cross Cultural mission was stuff like eating Crickets in Cambodia - not losing your commonsense!
Have since discovered why you are not allowed to wear your street clothes in the pool area - because they are "dirty". Ohhh - of course!!@!! Why didn't I think of that :-)))
Well done girls you could leave Aunty for dead in a swimming race that's if she could even get her togs on! Will go shopping here for a girls size 10 Kate Bryce will probably pay me to do it!
